Southwest RETAC, La Plata County EMS Council, CommonSpirit-Mercy Hospital &
Durango Independent Film Festival present..

Many thanks in order for all who attended, and helped organize the movie screening event at FLC Community Concert Hall!

The Honorable But Broken event planning committee would like to recognize and we thank everyone who participated and helped make this event a success.

This event was held during EMS Week 2025 and was organized to raise awareness and engage the EMS sustainability challenges for our region.  It was great to see many old friends and associates come together for this unique opportunity and we were honored to have the opportunity to acknowledge and show appreciation to all our providers and agencies in our region. A special shout-out to our Discussion Panel members who took questions from the audience and addressed the issues with what is taking place at the state and regional level.  Senator Baisley, Eric Lucas and Bryony each traveled significant distances to be here for us and Chiefs Sholes, Evans and Cook represented our region with all our benefit in mind, as they do every day!  While there is no magic wand that can make everything better for the tough work that needs to be done every day there is much that can be done to make it better and that’s a fight that everyone in attendance believes in.

We want to thank all our sponsors and supporters who helped make this happen through donations, in-kind donations, and organizational support.  Thank you CommonSpirit for their help with covering the venues costs and Vectra Bank and Braun Northwest, INC. for your help with dinner expenses. It is truly appreciated!  We’d also like to recognize Durango Independent Film Festival, Ballentine Communications and Hutton Broadcasting for all your assistance with promotion.

And last but not least, we want to thank all our local agency members who assisted with the organizational help needed to pull this together.  Thank you SWRETAC Wellness & Resilience Committee members for your help with the set-up and dinner service!  Your time and effort are greatly appreciated! Thank you Mason Dyer, Emilia Majewski and Clay Smith for all your help and expertise with graphics, video and photography.  Your work was essential for promotion and for capturing the moments. It is truly appreciated!

About the film

What if you called for an ambulance and one never came?

The goal of our documentary is to raise awareness of the systemic collapse of EMS and to advocate for change. Shockingly, most states don’t mandate the provision of EMS, so funding is unpredictable and inadequate. There is a critical workforce shortage, particularly in rural areas, which in turn has lead to much longer response times.

This is something that will affect all of us and we should be very concerned.

Producer Bryony Gilbey is a former CBS News 60 Minutes and ABC producer and mother of three EMS professionals. This is a very personal project for her and in fact she has self-financed all of the production costs to date.

Producer Richard Diefenbach is a former broadcast news journalist (ABC/CBS/FOX), professional history and English teacher, and owner of RPD Media Associates, LLC.

EMS provider and the public’s understanding and perception of the challenges related to emergency response and care can vary greatly.

We have a great lineup of regional and state industry leaders who are highly vested in working to better understand and improve the system for everyone.

Please tell us your thoughts going into the evening.
